Walk Against Cancer – Schools Edition
Each April, Cancer Support Mallorca runs Walk Against Cancer, a month-long awareness and fundraising campaign encouraging individuals, families, businesses and schools to walk, raise awareness, and help fund vital cancer support services across Mallorca.
Schools can take part in flexible, age-appropriate ways that fit easily around existing programmes such as Duke of Edinburgh (DofE), IB CAS, service learning or student leadership.
Why get involved?
Taking part gives students the opportunity to:
- Experience meaningful community service and social responsibility
- Develop leadership, teamwork, and organisational skills
- Raise awareness and make a genuine difference locally
- Support people in Mallorca affected by cancer and their families
Cancer Support Mallorca provides free emotional support, counselling, support groups, and practical help to those affected by cancer across the island.
Ways your school can take part
1. DofE / CAS / Student leadership involvement
Student leaders can help plan, organise, and run events—often aligning well with service components and leadership objectives.
2. Organise a school-based walk
A simple and safe option on school grounds (during PE, tutor time, lunchtime, or after school).
Examples: sponsored laps, “walk a mile” day, etc.
3. Join a virtual walking challenge
Students and/or staff log their walking distances throughout April—individually, by class, or as a whole school—combining totals to reach a shared goal.
4. Fundraise in a school-friendly way
Ideas include sponsored walks or step challenges, non-uniform days, bake sales or small stalls, or a “walk to school” week.
5. Awareness & promotion
If organising a walk isn’t possible, schools can still make a big impact by sharing the campaign through newsletters and school channels, creating posters or displays, running assemblies or tutor-time activities, or supporting student-led promotion.
6. GR221 inspiration
Some schools choose to symbolically “walk Mallorca” by combining student distances, using the GR221 route as inspiration.
