Buddy Support Programme
When you're facing a cancer diagnosis, it can be hard to know what questions to ask—or even what support you might need. That’s where our buddy system comes in.
A buddy is someone who has experienced a similar cancer journey and can offer friendly, empathetic support. While every journey is unique, speaking to someone who has “been there” can be an invaluable source of comfort and practical insight.
What is Buddying?
Buddying offers support at any stage of the cancer journey. It’s important to understand that a buddy is a friendly helper, not a substitute for friendship or counselling. Buddies support multiple clients over time, so boundaries are maintained to ensure everyone receives consistent and appropriate care.
Support can be offered via phone, video call, or in person, depending on what works best for both the client and the buddy.
What Your Buddy Can Offer:
- A listening ear—without judgment
- Emotional support and encouragement
- Sharing relevant experiences
- Filling in knowledge gaps
- Guidance and signposting to other services
Buddy support typically lasts from a few weeks up to six months, depending on your needs.
What You Can Expect From Your Buddy:
- An initial conversation to explore compatibility
- Agreement on preferred type and frequency of communication
- Respect for your privacy and confidentiality
- Consistent updates to our team about your meetings
- Buddies who are trained and supported on an ongoing basis
What We Ask From You:
- A commitment to attend your scheduled sessions
- Respect for the privacy and boundaries of your buddy
