Carcinoid tumors are a slow growing type of cancer that can arise in different areas of the body such as the digestive tract or the lungs, they can also grow in the testes or ovaries.

These tumors often don't cause signs or symptoms until the disease is well advances, they can produce symptoms that are not specific to cancer such as diarrhea, rashes, facial flushing. 

Carcinoid cancer is more common in women than in men and is mostly diagnosed in people over the age of 60.

Risk factors include family history of this illness and certain conditions that affect the stomach's ability to produce acid.

Treatment usually includes surgery and medication.

Symptoms for carcinoid tumors in the lungs:

  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Flushing
  • Weight gain
  • Pink or purple mark on the skin

Symptoms  of carcinoid tumors in the digestive tract

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bowel obstruction.
  • Rectal bleeding and/or pain
  • Flushing

It is always good to see a doctor if you have any of these symptoms for a prolonged period.
